View all search resultsPanji Gumilang, head of the Al-Zaytun school in Indramayu, West Java, was named a suspect by police on Tuesday, national police official Djuhandhani Rahardjo told reporters, and faces a maximum 10 years in prison if found guilt of blasphemy and hate speech.
The MUI’s fatwa is insufficient for the state to take firm actions against Al Zaytun, although the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) has frozen 256 bank accounts allegedly linked to Panji Gumilang.
The Al-Zaytun pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Indramayu, West Java, has been embroiled in controversy of allegations that the school and its leader Panji Gumilang have been promoting heretical teachings and linked to the breakaway Indonesian Islamic State (NII) movement.
