View all search resultsJokowi should have an easier job developing the local defense industry than previous presidents. All he has to do is ensure that all ministries and state agencies – not just the Defense Ministry and the TNI – buy their defense and security equipment locally.
Defense firms said they were trying to fulfill existing contracts with buyers, while also shifting some of their operations to produce essential medical products, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators, following a Defense Ministry instruction to support the government in tackling the outbreak.
Improving defense capability is more than about adding to the number of military platforms, but also about possessing the proficiency to utilize those cutting-edge tools. In addition, the Defense Ministry must play a greater role in guiding Indonesia’s procurements to ensure the efficacy of any additional platforms.
Procuring primary and other defense equipment from the domestic defense industry means job creation and taxes from direct activities, not to mention multiplier effects generated from related sources, such as suppliers of parts and components for weaponry, and non-related sources, such as housing and food for workers in the defense sector.
