The major social media platforms have this technology, but unfortunately, these algorithms were “raised” in English. None has developed true facility in Indonesian.
The IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking 2018 study shows the disconsolate picture that most countries in Southeast Asia have witnessed a relative drop in the ranking of overall and digital competitiveness. Worse, dropping three ranks to 62nd in the overall digital ranking, Indonesia is the lowest ranking country in the region.
The fact that Indonesia first initiated the forum on the topic of digital diplomacy is definitely something to be proud of. It required many considerations to make this forum a success regardless of the political situations at the domestic, regional and even global levels. Unexpectedly, all delegates appeared enthusiastic about the issue.
The current wave of technological change is unique in terms of the breadth of its scope and the pace of change. However, will the digital age benefit the world’s poorest people? With 3 billion people predicted to be offline still in 2023 and with many more failing to reap the internet’s full potential, the time to address digital exclusion is now.
Social scientists study society and the way people live – they help connect the dots. Social scientists can also pre-empt societal issues that could emerge from the technology – such as privacy invasion or biases – and work with engineering teams to address them.
The few initiatives that exist, such as the Ministry of Industry’s Making Indonesia 4.0 and Communication and Information Technology Ministry’s Digital Talent Scholarship, have no coherence. This reflects the country’s unclear policy and management on digital issues.
