View all search resultsIt is easy to blame climate change for the devastating flood in Jakarta this year. However, the persistent and worsening flooding shows us that a deeper issue lies in Jakarta’s water governance that cannot be simply solved by technological fixes.
Jakarta’s shortcomings as a capital are obvious: It has headline-grabbing problems with congestion, pollution, and land subsidence. Moving the capital alone will not solve any of these problems, as Jakarta continues to grow; and will remain Indonesia’s business center. The move is more about shifting economic activity and addressing “infrastructure gaps” by creating a new administrative hub outside of Java and Sumatra.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s recent victory speech indicated that infrastructure will once again be emphasized in his second term. So, why are we not celebrating more success in creating this badly needed infrastructure? We cited below some of the main reasons.
