A Javanese woman, whose progressive ideas were beyond her time, Kartini, who lived more than a century ago, has inspired generations of women to reach beyond the demands of society.
Celebrating the birth date of Indonesian heroine Kartini, which falls every April 21, a law student from Australia, Sally Andrews, has created a song dedicated to the icon of women’s emancipation titled "Teladan Kartini" (The Example of Kartini).
Raden Ajeng Kartini, popularly known as Kartini, is one of Indonesia's heroines. Born in Jepara, Central Java, on April 21, 1879, she is known as the icon of female emancipation. Indonesian director Hanung Bramantyo brought Kartini to life in the latest biopic Kartini, which will be screened in theaters on April 19.
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has inducted Ida Fiqriah as its first female pilot to reach the rank of captain of Boeing B737-800 NG planes, a narrow body-style aircraft, after she successfully recorded 10,585 flight hours.
To a lot of us Indonesians, Kartini Day is identical to “kebayaan” or dressing up in traditional costumes. This is only natural as since primary school, Kartini Day was the moment our moms went out and about looking for traditional costumes to rent so we could win little trophies.
