View all search resultsAt least five people died and four went missing when a massive landslide tore through Bantar Gebang, Indonesia’s largest landfill, following hours of heavy rain on Sunday, exposing the deadly consequences of Jakarta’s chronic waste mismanagement.
The agency revealed that Jakarta and Tangerang, despite facing the country’s most severe waste problems, were left out of the initial pilots as local administrations have yet to indicate their readiness.
Piles of plastic bags and household waste have been reported across South Tangerang since the Environment Ministry ordered a temporary shutdown of the city’s final trash disposal site, Cipeucang, on Dec. 10, citing failure to properly process waste.
The police have named Lin Jingzhang, director of PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT), a suspect in the case of radioactive contamination at the Modern Cikande Industrial Estate in Banten, as authorities face pressure to tighten supervision to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
An analysis conducted at WIOEH’s Green Hospital Laboratory in South Korea detected 23 hazardous plastic-related chemicals in all samples, with the waste workers showing significantly higher concentrations than the control group.
