tronger defense cooperation between Indonesia and Japan is key to enhancing their bilateral relationship, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said on Wednesday, after talks with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo that directly followed a three-day trip to China.

At the meeting, which came amid sharpening geopolitical unrest in the region, Prabowo and Kishida discussed bilateral and regional issues and pledged to deepen economic cooperation.

Prabowo, a president-elect, was given a marching band welcome upon arriving at the prime minister’s office.

Two days before, he had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and had pledged to maintain close bilateral ties.

Ahead of their closed-door talks, Kishida congratulated Prabowo on his victory in the February presidential election, saying that his visit was a “very joyous” occasion.

“Japan and Indonesia have been close friends for a long time. I would like these two countries to expand on cooperation as partners who share basic values and principles,” Kishida said.
