ndonesia and Malaysia pledged to deepen economic cooperation and boost trade within ASEAN during their bilateral meeting in Jakarta on Thursday, as both countries navigate through growing economic uncertainties amid various geopolitical tensions.
Foreign Minister Sugiono hosted his Malaysian counterpart Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan at the ministry’s building in Jakarta for the 17th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC). The meeting was a follow-up to the 13th Annual Consultation between President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Jakarta last July.
The ministers discussed pressing issues between the two countries, while also charting priorities ahead of the 14th Annual Consultation meeting slated to be hosted by Malaysia later this year.
Speaking after the meeting, Sugiono said the two top diplomats discussed various issues, including economic cooperation, regional stability and citizen protection.
On economic cooperation, Hasan said both nations focused on maximizing intra-ASEAN trade, citing its relatively low percentage compared with trade flows to markets outside the region.
“We trade extensively with countries outside Asia, whereas trade among ASEAN countries is still less than 25 percent,” the Malaysian minister said after the meeting. “It is the aspiration of ASEAN leaders to see that intra-ASEAN trade and investment increases.”
