A trial had taken place in Bali in December last year, but was deemed as “not entirely successful.”
ndonesia is set to launch a partial implementation of contactless transactions on one of its toll roads in October, following an unsuccessful trial of the technology late last year.
The technology, named the the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, allows toll road operators to collect payments electronically without stopping drivers at tollbooths, which enables smoother traffic flow. It will utilize camera gantries that record the license plates of cars traveling on the toll road.
The incoming rollout, however, would be limited, with other lanes still utilizing barriers that stop drivers at each of the toll booths, contrary to the full free-flow concept. Only one lane at selected toll gates would employ the technology while the other lanes would support the existing electronic money tap systems, named single lane free flow (SLFF).
“I hope and believe the MLFF system will be implemented this year. However, we might start with SLFF first,” said Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono during a press conference at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta on Tuesday.
“We are transitioning gradually [similar to shift] from cash to non-cash payments, starting with SLFF before eventually moving toward MLFF,” he added.
Hedy Rahadian, the ministry’s highways director general said at the same event that the government would target highways in the Greater Jakarta and Java regions for the initial rollout.
