View all search resultsE-commerce sellers say restrictions on platform fees under a planned new regulation would help them manage pricing more efficiently.
-commerce sellers in Indonesia are contending with rising platform fees, a planned withholding tax on their sales and curbs on imported goods, measures that threaten their margins and are reshaping pricing strategies in online retail.
While the government is preparing to tighten regulations governing e-commerce platforms, sellers say commissions remain the most immediate and tangible burden.
Aris, who has been selling baby clothing and accessories on Shopee and Tokopedia since 2020, says commissions and administrative fees charged by platforms have steadily increased, forcing sellers to adjust prices.
Operating fully online, Aris relies mostly on Shopee because of higher traffic on that platform.
He said the fees charged by the operator were manageable initially but had risen several times since he started, forcing him to adjust prices frequently.
“I can’t remember exactly, but I think in the beginning, the mandatory admin fee was around 4 percent. If you joined promotions, the total cut was around 7 to 8 percent,” Aris told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
“The last I remember, the mandatory fee alone had risen to around 8 to 10 percent.”
