hairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Megawati Soekarnoputri told party secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto to brace himself for possible arrest in connection with the hunt for former party member and graft fugitive Harun Masiku.
The National Police launched a probe into Hasto after he said on national television saying that instead of probing Harun, the country's anti-graft commission should investigate the distribution of social aid funds.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also questioned Hasto as a witness in the Harun case. The questioning occurred after the KPK said it was working to collect evidence of alleged efforts by unnamed suspects to hide Harun.
"Please don't be afraid. What has Pak Hasto done wrong. Just deal with it [possible arrest]," Megawati said at a party event on Tuesday as quoted by Antara.
Megawati said that she would personally confront members of the police force who handled cases involving Hasto and that she would challenge the move.
The former president said that she has experience in dealing with the heavy-handed approach of the police during the New Order era.
