T

he Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has advised people in East Java to be vigilant about potential disasters as a result of extreme weather as the province enters the transitional season this month.

Taufiq Hermawan, head of BMKG East Java’s Juanda Meteorology Station in Sidoarjo regency, said on Monday that parts of the province had started transitioning from the dry season to the rainy season this month, while others had entered the early rainy season.

He added that the period between seasons brought with it a risk of heavy rainfall, strong winds and hail. Rain could also fall in the afternoon or evening with varied intensity, and might be accompanied by lightning and sudden gusts.

This condition was due to atmospheric dynamics in the province, where warm sea surface temperatures resulted in a significant supply of moisture in the atmosphere.

“This condition can affect the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, which may lead to extreme weather during the transitional season,” Taufiq said.

He added that west monsoon winds were expected to arrive over Java starting in November and by the middle of that month, most of East Java was expected to enter the rainy season, which was predicted to peak in February 2025.
