A

series of disasters that hit parts of East Java in recent days have left at least four people dead and hundreds displaced, with several regencies and cities in the province reporting floods and landslides following heavy rain and strong winds as the rainy season ramps up.

A resident of Nawangan district in Pacitan regency was killed over the weekend when his shop collapsed in a landslide, after torrential rain eroded a nearby cliff.

“The victim was cleaning the ditch in front of his shop when the cliff collapsed and damaged his shop,” Nawangan district head Sukarwan said on Thursday. “He was found dead under the rubble.”

At least three people were killed when KLM Fajar Lorena Safari capsized in the waters off Situbondo regency during bad weather on Sunday.

The motor sailer was heading to Situbondo from Sapudi Island with 73 passengers on board when it sank in high waves, leaving two dead.

The third victim, a 65-year-old woman from Madura, was declared missing until rescuers found her body on Tuesday in the waters off Raas Island, east of Sapudi Island.
