C

ritics say the government should evaluate science lessons and practicums at schools following the death of a junior high school student while demonstrating a 3D-printed rifle in Siak regency, Riau.

Defense analyst Andrea Abdul Rahman said that while 3D printing open the doors to creativity, such a technology requires safety precautions to prevent tragedies.

“This case touches three crucial points of creativity, access and safety,” he told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

“The use of a 3D printer to make rifle shows outstanding creativity. Students learn that technology can create real goods, not only a theory.”

He added access to 3D printers is increasing, as the machines are getting cheaper and easier to use.

“This means innovative ideas can be materialized in classrooms. However, access without control could be dangerous if they are aimed at high-risk objects,” he said.
