T

he Central Java provincial administration is working on providing Rp 200 million (US$11,668) as guarantee to process South Korean study visa for each of 62 students from poor families receiving scholarship to continue their studies in South Korea.

The students may not be able to get their visas because they do not have the guarantee funds in their bank accounts as a requirement to get the visas.

The issue emerged when Central Java Provincial Secretary Sumarno received an audience from a university in South Korean province of Chungcheongbuk-do for a meeting for the sister province scholarship recipients in Semarang on Wednesday.

To overcome the issue, Sumarno said he was preparing innovative measure to make sure the 62 students can still pursue their studies in South Korea.

“I am asking Central Java provincial administration officials to become foster parents,” he said.

“The money is just a guarantee at bank accounts; it will not be lost. Maybe an official will accompany a student.”

The measure is taken because the sister province scholarship program is specially designed for poverty eradication. Differing from other academic scholarships, the program is aimed at working competence so the graduates could lift up their families from poverty.
