T

he newly crowned Langkat Sultan XV said he was ready to lead the sultanate on the east coast of North Sumatra following the death of his father, and continue the lineage of sultans dating back to the 16th century.

“I am ready to carry out the mandate as Sultan Langkat,” Tengku Ariefanda Abdul Djalil Rahmadshah told The Jakarta Post on Thursday, while in mourning.

“I was appointed as Langkat Sultan in front of my father’s body, Langkat Sultan XIV.”

He said his appointment as sultan had been carried out legally in accordance with Malay customs. The new sultan cited the Malay expression, “Raja mangkat, Raja diangkat. Raja diangkat, Raja menanam,” which means, “A king dies, a king is appointed. A king is appointed, a king is buried.”

The 42-year-old Ariefanda said the expression means that when a sultan passes away, his successor must first be appointed before the late sultan is buried.

The previous sultan, Tengku Azwar Abdul Djalil Rahmadshah, passed away on Tuesday from diabetes.
