EMARANG: Prominent human rights campaigner and legal expert from the Surabaya-based Airlangga University, Soetandyo Wignjosoebroto, died on Monday from kidney failure and stroke. He was 80.
Soetandyo, who was presented the prestigious Yap Thiam Hien Award in 2011, passed away at the Elisabeth Hospital in Semarang, Central Java, after undergoing intensive treatment since Aug. 26.
'We will bury him at Keputih Cemetery Park in Sukolilo, Surabaya, East Java. We will immediately travel to Surabaya after conducting prayers for him at Al Azhar Mosque,' Soetandyo's younger brother, Agus Sukaton, said in Semarang on Monday.
Born in Surabaya on Nov. 19, 1932, Soetandyo was married to the late Asminingsih with whom he had three children. Asminingsih died in 1965 and Soetandyo remarried with Endang Larasati, the dean of the Diponegoro University's Master of Public Administration program in Semarang, last June.
Soetandyo was a law professor known for his progressive views. He served as a member of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) from 1993 to 2002.
