ohammad “Is” Istiqamah Djamad, vocalist of Payung Teduh, has decided to leave the band whose music redefines classic 1960’s Indonesian tunes, keroncong (Portuguese-tinged Indonesian pop) and jazz.

After pondering the matter since June, he said his adventure with the band would end next year but believed the band would continue on without him.

He played down internal conflict within the group regarding his reason to leave, saying that his departure was mostly because he no longer shared a similar musical vision with the other band members.

“I feel Payung Teduh has lost its spirit to make music and the group is busier with off-air events instead,” Is was quoted by kompas.com as saying. “There’s nothing negative [behind his decision]. Please underline that. It’s because we have different points of view about the future of Payung Teduh.”

Despite his plan, Is said he was still committed to finishing the band’s third album, which is scheduled to be released this month and will feature nine songs, including one that will be part of the soundtrack for Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 (Verses of Love 2).
