A centerpiece of the Biden administration's efforts to deepen economic ties with Asian nations and counter China's rising dominance in the Pacific, the IPEF is a forum for multilateral talks aimed at forging agreements in a range of areas, including trade.
Biden is expected to outline progress on IPEF which will bring together three of the world's largest five economies -- the United States, Japan and India -- as well as Australia, South Korea and much of Southeast Asia, but not China.
Biden greeted President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the White House as the two leaders prepare for a Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, where Washington hopes to reduce friction with Beijing. Biden is due to meet Xi on Wednesday.
