The video of Elina’s forced eviction recently went viral on social media, drawing widespread public outrage. The footage also reignited concerns that members of mass organizations are often hired to intimidate or extort individuals involved in land disputes.
People residing within Tesso Nilo National Park in Riau are demanding that the government allow comanagement of land and plantations with the state-owned PT Agrinas Palma Nusantara instead of evicting them and handing the land to third party companies.
Disputes between plantation companies and local communities over land rights were the most common cause of agrarian disputes in Indonesia, accounting for 37 percent of the 1,023 conflicts recorded last year.
The most common acts of state repression found in land dispute cases are physical violence and verbal intimidation, divide and conquer tactics and criminalization, according to a report by the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI).
