As the world finally wakes up to the critical climate role of oceans, which cover around 71 percent of Earth's surface, Indonesia has a clear opportunity to take the helm of global ocean governance at this week's UNOC3.
The move is considered mostly symbolic, as it will not impact areas where oil and gas development is currently underway, and mainly covers zones where drillers have no important prospects, including in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
A World Bank report pointed out several preexisting gender inequalities in Indonesia, such as women being more prone to poverty and lower literacy, as well as having less access to basic human rights and limited representation in political processes compared to men.
