Civil movements and members of the general public have taken to the street, fought in courtrooms and voiced their concerns online against policymakers’ controversial decisions, with some campaigns having evolved to social movements to aid ones affected by disasters.
A group calling itself "Generation Z Mexico" that called for the protests has said in a "manifesto" circulating on social media that it is non-partisan and represents Mexican youth that are fed up with violence, corruption and abuse of power.
It was the first major protest outside the annual climate talks since COP26 four years ago in Glasgow, as the last three gatherings were held in locations with little tolerance for demonstrations, namely Egypt, Dubai and Azerbaijan.
The two protesters, Muhammad Farhan Hamid, 23, and Reno Syachputra Dewo, 24, were reported missing after they reportedly joined a protest on Aug. 29 outside the Jakarta Police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Kwitang.
Solidarity from people in other Southeast Asian nations may help support a people’s movement in a country and put more pressure on the government to make reforms on policies, experts and activists have said.
