US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal on Monday with India that slashes US tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent from 50 percent in exchange for India halting Russian oil purchases and lowering trade barriers.
The US and India have been negotiating for months to thrash out a trade deal, but talks have been complicated by the South Asian nation's Russian oil imports, which prompted Washington to impose a punitive 25 percent tariff on Indian goods in August, raising total levies to 50 percent.
In the long term, Trump’s tariffs are likely to propel India to rethink its strategic priorities toward a decision on whether to pursue economic openness or retreat into protectionist autarky as it redefines its place in the world.
Aside from Russian President Vladimir Putin, leaders from Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia have been invited to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, to be held in the northern port city of Tianjin from August 31 to September 1.
"For us, our farmers' welfare is supreme," Modi said at an event in New Delhi. "India will never compromise on the wellbeing of its farmers, dairy (sector) and fishermen. And I know personally I will have to pay a heavy price for it," he said.
