View all search resultsIndonesia is emerging as a new operational hub for transnational online gambling and cyber scam syndicates, according to the National Police, as a crackdown on scam centers in mainland Southeast Asia pushes some criminal networks to seek new locations.
Police said the three foreign nationals, two Pakistanis and one Indian, and the Medan resident had met while working at a scam center in Cambodia before regrouping in Medan to carry out similar operations.
The Chinese deportees are the latest to be netted in a string of raids against online scam operations involving foreign actors, with at least three such raids in various regions in May, as the government moves to tighten immigration policies to avoid Indonesia becoming a hotbed of cross-border cybercriminal activities.
When asked whether WFT was the infamous hacker Bjorka, responsible for alleged data breaches targeting several government institutions between 2022 and 2024, Fian said authorities have not yet confirmed this, noting that “everybody can be anybody on the internet.”
