Khoiruddin, a local resident, explained that the mudflow has destroyed several rubber and rice crops and left some farmland infertile. The mud has also contaminated the clean water supply for four nearby villages, while the gas emitted from the mudflow has polluted the air in the region.
Mount Raung, located on the border of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso and Jember regencies, erupted around 7:00 a.m., sending an ash column 1,500 meters above the summit. The thick gray plume reached an altitude of 4,832 meters above sea level and drifted west and northwest.
Authorities have started evacuating villages located near the volcano, which has been showing increasing activity this month, after its alert status was raised to the highest "warning" level on Wednesday.
Mount Ibu erupted at 07:11 a.m. (2211 GMT Tuesday) for around two minutes, the volcanology agency said in a statement. Clouds of thick grey ash billowed into the sky leaning towards the west, said Muhammad Wahid, the agency's head.
