Victims of Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades began government-supervised visits to their ravaged former homes on Monday for the first time since the November blaze, looking to retrieve personal items that might have survived.
No casualties were reported. However, authorities said liquid pesticides that spilled during the fire, along with water used to extinguish the flames, flowed into nearby drainage channels that connect directly to the Cisadane River and its tributary, the Jalantreng River.
“Initial findings suggest the flames may have originated in a storage area containing raw materials for sandal production, including chemicals. However, we do not yet know what triggered the fire,” Tohap said on Wednesday.
