View all search resultsThe Constitutional Court ordered a revote in the legislative election for the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) seat in West Sumatra with the inclusion of former graft convict and former DPD speaker Irman Gusman on the candidate list after the poll body previously rejected his participation in the February poll.
As long as corruption remains rampant, state institutions, including the KPU, should serve as role models in providing no room for graft. Elections should produce lawmakers who fight for people’s aspirations rather than narrow personal or factional interests.
The Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), which perused LHKPN data on the KPK website, has reported 55 lawmakers to the House of Representatives’ ethics council for their failure to do their obligation as public officials, as mandated by the 2002 KPK Law and the 1999 Law on Clean Governance.
While we must give Firli the benefit of the doubt, we cannot ignore the fact that Firli has been found guilty of ethics violations before. His appointment as KPK chief was highly controversial, as the decision was made despite complaints about his, at best, questionable ethics record.
The Law and Human Rights Ministry has granted parole to several high-profile graft convicts, including former public prosecutor Pinangki Sirna Malasari, former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali and former Constitutional Court justice Patrialis Akbar.
