The "Online News Act," or House of Commons bill C-18, introduced in April by Justin Trudeau's Liberal government, laid out rules to force platforms like Meta's Facebook and Google to negotiate commercial deals and pay news publishers for their content.
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) ruled in October that Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, exploited its dominant position in Android and told it to remove restrictions imposed on device makers, including related to pre-installation of apps. It also fined Google $161 million.
The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) will undertake a preliminary investigation into Google in the next 60 days, on suspicion of monopoly, product tying, abuse of dominant position and discrimination, all through the mandatory use of Google Pay Billing (GPB).
