View all search resultsThe President’s credibility is at stake, unless he pressed for a thorough verification of Prabowo’s profile before choosing his former contender over other candidates tipped for the post. As a consequence, President Jokowi — as Prabowo’s direct superior — must jump to the defense of his defense minister if the latter faces problems at home and overseas. The President cannot just let Prabowo respond to all those criticisms against him alone as that is what leadership is all about.
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? The answer to the latter from "Bohemian Rhapsody" is, of course, no. On Oct. 23, Prabowo Subianto officially became President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s subordinate for the next five years. Some suspect the President’s choice for the Defense Ministry was one of mere political expediency. But Jokowi may see something in Prabowo that others do not.
Certainly, President Jokowi has the prerogative to appoint and dismiss his aides, but democracy allows the public to question how he justifies his choices of Cabinet members. We don’t have a dream Cabinet, but we’d better give him the benefit of the doubt and let time tell whether he made the right decisions.
Given that Puan Maharani and Yasonna Laoly both resigned from the Cabinet to take up their seats in the new House, a reshuffle is all but certain. However, the composition of this Working Cabinet 2.0 is less certain.
Many surveys have found that a corrupt businessman-cum-politician is much greedier than a common civil servant who steals mostly for consumption. But politicians who own businesses never feel it is enough, as they do it to fill a ”bottomless-pit” of business financing needs.
